Spotify has launched a pilot for a new Premium account aimed at children using its service. The test is starting in Denmark, New Zealand, and Sweden, and is being described as a “managed account.” The managing is done by parents and guardians of children under 13 – or the local equivalent according to regulations.
“Managed accounts enable them to better tailor the content available to young listeners via in-app controls—like managing the playback of Canvas, videos, and content labeled as explicit,” Spotify explained. “They will also be able to decide whether a young listener can play certain artists or tracks using Spotify’s new control feature.”
One of the benefits for adults is that their children’s listening won’t influence their own recommendations. This pilot will run alongside the company’s existing Spotify Kids app, designed for children under 13.
New Parental Control Possibilities
With this initiative, Spotify aims to offer more parental control options, enabling a safer and more tailored user experience for children. Parents will not only be able to restrict certain types of content but also have peace of mind as their children explore music suited to their age.
An interesting aspect is the integration of different features within the platform, including Spotify Kids, which already offers a curated selection of music and stories appropriate for young users. Now, with managed Premium accounts, parents can further personalize their children's musical experience, ensuring they have access to content they find suitable.
Expansion and Future Prospects
There is no timeline yet for expanding the pilot to other countries, but early success could pave the way for the feature to reach more regions soon. This initiative reflects a growing trend among digital platforms to prioritize child safety and well-being by offering more robust tools for parents to monitor and control media consumption.
Spotify’s new approach may attract more families to its Premium service, adding value to the product and strengthening its user base.
